I am happy to introduce to you my outline for “In the Beginning…”
“In the Beginning…” is my love and inspiration of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. It is a reflection of the Holy Bible from beginning to end. Acts I, II and III are reflections of the Old Testament and Acts IV, V and VI are reflections of the New Testament, because of my passion for Opera I wanted the saxophone to be the voice. What I try to do is to translate the scriptures with music. Music is a type of “theology” and Holy Scriptures can be learned in an artistic way through music, as did Michelangelo through his amazing art works. This project was created to expose the word of God through music, starting with helping to render myself.
The title “In the Beginning…” comes from the time I was putting together my project in Texas, after having spent several years in Italia and France, my aunt knowing nothing about me creating an artistic project about the bible, much about my music, or why I was back in America, to my great surprise, handed me to keep my late grandmother Gregorita’s Sacred Italian bible. In Italian the Old Testament opens with “In principio…” and this is the Italian version of “In the Beginning…”
The underline story for “In the Beginning…” is about “woman.”
Opens with me on saxophone (expressivo) in the abyss, with anticipation of creation of heaven and earth, with the spirit of God in our midst, emphasizing the creation of the world, “Life.”
I start with woman of all the living, EVA, the “woman” in the garden, scorned because of her disobedience. Unfortunately following her own will, and disobeyed God. (Matthew: 13-15), “Listen as you will, you shall not understand, look intently as you will, you shall not see.”
To AVE (if you spell EVA in reverse you get AVE), our mother, “the woman” in fact the perfect woman, who did obey God’s will. She is the mother of all the afflicted, the comforter, and our gate to heaven.
To “woman” seeking to be redeemed, by the mystery of the Incarnate Word.
In conclusion, to the Bride, “the woman” who prepares to meet her husband in heaven, the New Creation, Eternal life.
Up to this point, this is my theological view of my project. Now, I would like to begin my artistic reasoning for “In the Beginning…” I showcase the saxophone to transform you. I use this powerful instrument called the saxophone to sing to your heart, in an operatic style. We are “spiritual beings” therefore I know it is possible to be transformed. The saxophone is a powerful instrument, and has many potentials and I take full advantage of the opportunities throughout my VI Acts with each act emphasizing a different emotion.
Now, I want to focus on the Music for “In the Beginning….”
The music is composed by Armando Ghidoni. I commissioned him in 2008 to write the music for this project. He is an Italian composer, with the sensitivity of the Italian bel canto, French in his harmonic approach, and great jazz rhythms. He has also written an Opera “Minou et Gourmolon”, with performances in Vienna, Paris and Italy. His music compositions can be heard all over the world and most recently at Carnegie Hall, and the Paris Opera house.
“In the Beginnning…” is a Biblical Opera.
The music is also cinematic in its orchestration, and in an Operatic style. We Americans love Hollywood film, so we use this approach. I will be the solo artist, a one woman act, performance on saxophone and narrating my reflections of the Holy Bible in 6 acts. It is about 60 minutes in length. We feel that we have created something that is artistically unique and innovative. |
